Patient Safety – CPR Training

Date Sunday, January 24th, 2010 Posts Posted by Tom Terry

Q: Are dental professionals required to have Healthcare Provider level CPR training for license renewal?

A: Although I highly recommend that all dental professionals, from front office to back get the Healthcare Provider level CPR training, the answer to your question currently is No.  Referring to the Dental Practice Act, Article 4, Chapter 1, Section 1016, mandatory courses required by the board for license renewal is the Dental Practice Act, Dental Board Infection Control Regulations 1005, and a course in Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR approved by American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

When it comes to patient safety the best training and the best skills is paramount – for onsite CPR Training in the Greater Bay Area, I recommend contacting Roland Guy at Critical Care Solutions, 916.226.6053, visit their website: www.criticalcaresolutions.com

Preventative Maintenance

Date Sunday, September 13th, 2009 Posts Posted by Tom Terry

It’s a no-brainer when it comes to keeping healthcare equipment in tip-top working order. It’s a no-brainer when it comes to knowing that patients and staff are not at risk. I am a big fan of PM and I highly recommend it, however I find that dentist fall under one of two schools of thought when it come to maintaining healthcare equipment,

Old School – The docs who fall under this category are usually the real cheap kind; you know the ones who asked for the best price even on free stuff. Their mind set ranges from “if it isn’t broken why fix it” to “a little smoke and flames coming from the sterilizer is normal”. These are the docs who would repair their own X-ray equipment because they bought the parts and instructions on Ebay.

But in reality a vast number of these docs are using equipment that is beginning to fail or has become unsafe and don’t even know it. This stage of “unknown” produces unnecessary risk to patients and staff. These doctors are placing a huge amount of liability on their shoulders by risking the health of their patients and staff.

New School – The docs who fall under this category see having a preventative maintenance on their healthcare equipment is a good business decision. They see it as an investment for protecting their patients and staff and some very expensive equipment. They know that down-time from equipment failure is costly not to mention the risk that can be placed on patients when equipment begins the failing process especially when it comes to sterilizers and radiography equipment.

They understand that preventative maintenance performed by a PM Professional is also “asset protection”, in case of a legal inquiry or process, preventative maintenance records and documentation serves as proof which reduces liability.

It’s a matter of when, not if! – As inspections of dental offices increase more and more data is being collected. This data is generating a huge concern among patients, employees, inspectors and insurance companies – just search the internet and you will find out for yourself why.  So don’t get caught in the trap of kidding yourself that preventative maintenance isn’t necessary because it is and it will soon become a key element in office inspections and audits, it will soon become a key factor among new patients and it is a key factor in reducing your liability.

Call a preventative maintenance professional and get a preventative maintenance service today, better yet click on my “Resources” tab for the company that I recommend, but do it today!

It’s a no-brainer!
